The Davis Islands problem
Salt and sand arrive on bare feet. Beach sand is quartz with sharp edges, and it works to the base of the pile where it grinds the foundation every time somebody walks the rug. Salt is the quieter half: it is hygroscopic, so it pulls humidity out of the air and holds it against the fibre long after the towel-dry. Two years past a wash, that combination leaves a gritty base and a faint damp weight in the rug.
