The Hyde Park problem

Air under a pier-and-beam house off Swann or Rome runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler than the room above it, and in August that difference turns the underside of a rug into a condensing surface. The pile looks fine; the foundation cotton is damp. It announces itself by smell long before it shows, and by that point the warp threads at the low end of the floor have usually begun to weaken.
