Renovation dust is the specific risk. Sanding old pine throws a fine, resinous dust that settles into pile and then hardens; polyurethane overspray does the same and sets permanently. A rug that lived through a floor refinish goes stiff, with a dull grey cast that reads as dirt but is actually cured finish on every fibre. It is recoverable before the finish fully hardens, and much less so after.
